Kele performs Tenderoni on the BBC.

Semester over. Break on. Blogging resumed.

Last night I was listening to old Bloc Party songs (put out another album already!) when I realized I had heard that their lead singer briefly jumped ship to pursue a solo career. Unlike Thom Yorke with Radiohead, Kele pissed off the other members of Bloc Party when he decided to press the pause button. Deciding to sing more dance tracks that fit like perfect lego pieces to the underground club scene of London, one can see why Kele wanted to go on his own for a bit.

While not entirely convincing with his voice alone, Kele creates quite the dance song. All have a distinct groove to them with catchy melodies and mini dance breaks here and there. Songs that grab my ears include "Release Me", "Goodbye Horses", and "You Belong To Someone Else". The one below is called "Tenderoni" off of Kele's debut album The Boxer.

Take a second and check out some of his other songs, you'll be surprised. And you might suddenly wish that Kele as a solo artist and Kele as the lead singer of Bloc Party could coexist peacefully.

Day Job: Songs For Bieber. Night Job: Frank Ocean Swim Good.

Having been ignored by the record company (Island Def Jam) that signed him, Frank Ocean released his entire album for free on his Tumblr account. Titled "Nostalgia, Ultra", this passionate and humble release is putting Mr. Ocean on the map.

Born in New Orleans but living in Beverly Hills (evacuated to LA when hurricane Katrina hit), Frank also goes by the name Christopher Breaux. Under this name he has written songs for artists such as John Legend, Justin Bieber and Beyonce Knowles, as well as Kanye West and Jay-Z. Pretty impressive huh?

"Nostalgia, Ultra" shows Ocean's maturity amidst a mostly younger crowd of fellow collaborators. The lyrics to each and every song are meaningful and Ocean uses his smarts to drop plenty of small tribute tidbits to Stanley Kubrick, Coldplay, MGMT and The Eagles. The album feels like a close friend. Sit down with it all night and learn a lot about yourself and society around you.

Swim Good was the first song that caught my ear on the first go-round of the album. I then saw the music video and was blown away. Put a Cadillac on the California coastline and you've got a winner. Enjoy.

Justice are BACK.

That's right. Justice have a new song AND a brand new video to go along with it.

Fearing that the famous French electronic duo had decided to take an extremely long vacation on Richard Branson's island or yacht or galactic spaceplane, Gaspard Auge and Xavier de Rosnay have returned to the scene with "AUDIO, VIDEO, DISCO". Due out Oct. 25th, their long-awaited sophomore release is said to be more "rock-oriented" than their previous hit album. As opposed to their all-electronic instrument first album, the new album was recorded with all real instruments. Whether that makes for a worse sound awaits to be seen.

So far they have released two tracks with videos from the upcoming album. "Civilization" boasts a neat looking video and has some very catchy moments. The title track (featured below) is what caught my attention. With a driving beat, repeating melody line and straightforward feel, this song shows me Justice haven't lost their magic. Enjoy.

The Horrors Are Next Brit Band To Take Over. Sorry, Radiohead.

With hints of Radiohead, Blur and The Verve, this group of young Brits is something special.

Formed in 2005, The Horrors are a post-punk, semi-shoegaze band from Southend on Sea, England. They have three albums out so far: Strange House, Primary Colours and their newest being Skying (released in July). Each album has progressively climbed the UK charts. Their first album getting to 37th overall and Skying reaching an outstanding 5th overall. It's no surprise Louise Brailey, of the UK's 'NME' magazine, called the group "one of this generation's most important bands."

While not as complete and whole of an album as Primary Colours, Skying showcases the group's growing maturity. The songs have more meaning somehow, with a clear focus being on atmosphere, background and significant subject matter . Faris Badwan (lead singer) is more comfortable and confident with his singing than ever before and it enhances each song's overall appeal greatly.

The band recently recorded a live performance in New York City's famed Webster Hall for MTV Hive. The song featured below, "Moving Further Away", is one of two centerpieces to Skying (the other being "Still Life"). It's an impressive and meditative sprawling piece that shows you the band isn't afraid of letting things develop. Patience is a virtue and this song is the reward. Give it some time to sink in and appreciate the waxing and waning of the energy. Enjoy.

Lykke Li Gaining Momentum

Already proven, Lykke Li shows she has more tricks up her sleeve.

Li's new album, Wounded Rhymes, was released this past February to near universal acclaim. Metacritic gave it a "universal acclaim" rating of 83/100 and BBC Music proclaimed "another outstanding album" and "...there is a level of subtlety at work here far more sophisticated than most mainstream releases, the sound's sheer size is almost overwhelming."

Having had enough of the cold weather and cold emotions in Stockholm, Lykke Li decided to write the album in Los Angeles. Li said, "I was totally romanticizing the idea of Los Angeles when The Doors, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young were hanging out there. I was trying to find David Lynch and Leonard Cohen with no luck. It was just more of a retreat."

Directed by Tarik Saleh and featuring Stellan SkarsgĂ„rd (Pirates Of The Caribbean and Thor), this video doesn't lack star-power. Lykke Li displays the raw emotion you'd expect to find in a seasoned actress, and the whole setting of the video contrasts the music of the song. It really does look like a scene from David Lynch's Twin Peaks so in a sense she did find her own, inner version of Lynch somewhere in the hills of the city of angels. "Sadness Is a Blessing" shines a light on the power of changing attitudes for a positive outlook. Vocally driven with minimal distraction, Li has layered the song so the lyrics absorb completely. This piece must resonate with her because it feels as if she's yelling the message to you from on top of a hill, but the valley below turns that yelling into a clear, melodic-sounding verse of song. Enjoy.

Dum Dum Girls New Album Out Soon-Bhang!

"Things can be so awful but at least they can be bliss."
-Dee Dee Penny

Dee Dee, also known as Kristen Gundred, formed Dum Dum Girls back in 2008. Quickly gaining attention from her solo songs, Sub Pop signed her in 2009 and a four piece band formed as a result. They went on to release their first full album, I Will Be, the following year. Their new album is due out this September and pre-orders were just made possible two days ago (Aug. 8th).

Inspired by the likes of The Ramones, Patti Smith, The Beach Boys and Billie Holliday, DDG have a really nice throwback, stripped-down sound that doesn't try too hard to impress. With subtle notes of Blondie (producer Richard Gottehrer produced Blondie as well) and other Rockabilly-esque artists, "Bhang, Bhang, I'm a Burnout" turns distorted echo into loveable pop. Enjoy.

Air France New Track (Mix by Star Slinger)

Having already signed with Sincerely Yours, Swedish duo Air France ( Joel Karlsson and Henrik Markstedt) are almost done with their first full length album. They released an EP (2008), No Way Down, that generated a lot of buzz from music magazines and even pulled in a 8.6 rating on Pitchfork's Best New Music section.
Having only released an EP so far, this post-rave bliss duo have their work cut out for them to be recognized on the world stage. But without a doubt they are up for the challenge. They have teamed up with Star Slinger to put out a track that makes you stop and double-take. Fluid with just the right amount of heart-thumping beat, it's a laid back song that makes you feel like spinning around and around with a huge smile on your face. "It Feels Good To Be Around You" feels really good around you, especially as sound-waves coming from that outdated, turn-dial, gold and blue stereo system out in your garage. Hook it up, play the song and enjoy.

SBTRKT featuring Drake; Announces North American Tour

For anyone that likes electronic, dubstep, dance, or even a minimalist combination of all three I have your go-to artist.
SBTRKT got his start in the underground club scene of east London, specifically in a popular underground (literally) club called Plastic People. He met connections there that led him to Young Turk Records (where he has signed) and Sampha (A major contributor to both his new album and to SBTRKT's live shows).
SBTRKT released his debut album on June 28 and just announced a North American tour from Oct 25th to Nov 5th. He will be playing at venues such as the Bowery Ballroom in NYC, the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, Club Royale in Boston and Bluebird in Denver.
If you need any reason to go his show in your town then check out the clip below. Featuring an impromptu appearance by Drake while at a concert in Toronto, SBTRKT (playing drums) and Sampha (keyboards and synth) light up the dancehall with an intrinsic and organically moving sound. Complete with african masks and all, they are one duo you won't want to miss.
Enjoy.

New video for Best Coast directed by Drew Barrymore

When your album ranks 39th on Pitchfork's Top 50 Albums of 2010, you know you've hit gold.

Best Coast is a glorious combination of lo-fi wishy-washy goodness and twangy, punchy surf rock that reminds you of that time when you went to that place and you heard that band. Forgotten memories of the past come swirling back when you press play to any number of their songs. Perfect for summer but always welcome year round, Crazy For You (BC's 2010 LP release) boasts songs like "Boyfriend", "When I'm With You" and "New Deal".

Just released today and directed by Drew Barrymore, the video for "New Deal" stars Chloe Moretz, Donald Glover, Miranda Cosgrove, Alia Shawkat and Tyler Posey. It's throwback and it takes place in a cement riverbed, what else could you ask for?

Enjoy.

Can't Miss: Miami Horror + Kimbra

Catch 'em while they're hot!

Miami Horror is a disco boppin' lovefest hailing from good 'ol Melbourne, Australia. They have this throwback electronic sound that doesn't overwhelm you with layers upon layers of electronic gushiness. Benjamin Plant, the head producer behind MH, got his influences from Prince, New Order and Michael Jackson among many others. Plant began DJing at small house parties for groups friends and by 2008, he had released a slew of remixes for bands such as Bloc Party, The Presets, Datarock and The Dirty Secrets. Horror released their first EP, Bravado, shortly after in 2009. In 2010, they signed with EMI for full distribution in Australia and France and released their full length album, Illumination. For many of the tracks MH pulled in outside voices to contribute to the album. One such voice was Alan Palomo of Neon Indian and the talented Kimbra.
For all of you out there who have NOT heard of or listened to Kimbra: get on the bandwagon NOW! Kimbra has just signed with Warner Bros. for international distribution and that means she's headed for fame in the US. MH will relocate to the US very shortly for the same reason. Get to know these two wonderful artists, both of which are featured in the song I Look To You ft. Kimbra. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.

Green polo and Blue jeans: The Verve @ Gloucester.

Wigan, England. Shoegaze. Space Rock. 90's.

What do all these have in common? The Verve.

Forming in 1989, Richard Ashcroft (Vocalist), Nick McCabe (Guitarist), Simon Jones (Bassist), Peter Salisbury (Drummer) came together. By the mid-90's they had released three full albums and multiple Ep's. Being recognized as "one of the tightest knit, yet ultimately volatile bands in history", they finally broke through to worldwide fame in 1997 with Bittersweet Symphony, off their album "Urban Hymns". They have broken up three times and reunited twice, with the last being in 2008 (including a sold-out concert at Madison Square Garden). They are timeless, and many hope they reunite once again.

Here's a clip from the Gloucester Music Festival in '94, with the band playing Slide Away. Enjoy.

Swedes taking over Reset Festival.

Consisting of Daniel Hogberg and Bjorn Synneby, Pacific! are a Swedish electro musical duo.

There is no flashy singing or lewd lyrics. There is no huge backing band. There isn't even any lip synching. They are two guys in front of a digital screen with a guitar, mic, and mixing tables. Oh, and they sound spectacular. Let them suck you in.

Here's Disappear from their album "Reveries". Enjoy.

Coldcuts and A1 Sauce.

At the height of hip-hop's "golden age", Long Island boys Eric B. and Rakim were shaking things up. Taking influence from Run D.M.C, adding James Brown samples, and infusing it with some Eric B. scratching lead to hip-hop's initial love for samples within songs. During their first album, "Paid In Full", Rakim said, " I'd go into the studio, put the beat down, write the song in like an hour, and go into the booth and read it from the paper...". It's pretty amazing what these two did while they were writing songs together. Just check out any song from "Paid In Full" or "Follow The Leader" and you'll instantly see why they were so innovative.

Here's the Coldcut remix of the title track from "Paid In Full". Enjoy.

Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright. 7.4.11

Happy 4th everybody,

"Cheap Trick gained fame by twisting the Beatlesque into something shinier, harder, more american." - LA Times.

Cheap Trick was formed in 1973 in Rockford, Illinois in the midst of rock's prime-time era. Blending pop with power, they gathered quite a substantial fan base and released many hit songs including I Want You To Want Me, Dream Police and The Flame. As proof of their lasting mark, they are still touring the globe actively.

Here's a clip from "The Midnight Special" with Cheap Trick performing their hit, Surrender. Enjoy.

Katie Melua. A Happy Place. Take Two.

Here's the other remix. This one's by Danny Kirsch.

If you haven't already, check out the post below for an alternate remix. Enjoy.

Katie Melua. A Happy Place. Take One.

Ms. Melua is a Georgian (the country) born singer-songwriter who moved to England at the age of fourteen. In 2003 she signed with the Dramatico record label and went on to become the UK's bestselling female artist in 2006 with her album, Piece by Piece. She caught the eye of Mike Batt (Dramatico's head man) while performing at a BRIT school (prominent London performing arts and technology college) showcase, singing an original song about the death of her idol, Eva Cassidy.

A Happy Place isn't technically a dance song in its original form. However, it does have a good beat and makes the head move about, and a smile has been known to appear. It's easily findable on the interweb.

I thought it would be nice to bring some remixes of the song to the table. The one below is by Loverush UK and was a huge dance hall hit in Europe. It doesn't compromise the feel of the original song like many remixes tend to do. While I love the fact that some remixes take a song and make it feel like a completely different one, I really like that this remix kept the framework of the song intact. I'm also posting a different remix of the song in the above post for comparison's sake. Enjoy.

Dance it up. 6.10.11

Oh yeah, oh yeah,

Dance track time. Dubstep time. Mix of both time.

"Everything I do is for the music - I want to master it like Bruce Lee mastered martial arts"- Dizzee Rascal.

Born in Bow, East London, Dylan Mills, also known as Dizzee Rascal, is one of the most well known rappers in all of England. He ushered in the Dubstep movement to the younger masses of the underground club scene in London. From there it grew bigger and bigger until it reached multiple continents and millions of people. Dubstep is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the Americas and it is a favorite among the British youth.

This song partners Dizzee's rapping and lyrical abilities with Armand Van Helden's electronic dance production skills. When it came out in 2009 it was an immediate chart topper in the UK. Check it out and you'll find out why. Enjoy.

Guildford Civic Hall. 5.30.11

Hey,

Formed in London in 1968, Free rocked the scene until they broke up several years later in 1973. The lead singer (Paul Rogers) and drummer (Simon Kirke) moved on to form Bad Company, another famous rock band. Even though short-lived, anyone who listened to rock music in the late sixties and seventies knows them well. Songs like All Right Now and Come Together in the Morning were chart toppers and this next song ain't bad either. From their album "Highway", here's Ride on a Pony. Enjoy.

5.27.2011

Oh baby, baby, baby please. 5.27.11

Hey,

I first got introduced to this band on the David Letterman Show in '08. I loved how they incorporated the cello and violin into indie rock song arrangements. Sort of a more folky and down to earth Arcade Fire but without the edginess. I then learned that in 2007 their original drummer had drowned under unusual circumstances and the band had decided to continue on and find a replacement. They're first major album, The Rhumb Line, is sprinkled with songs paying tribute to him and anyone listening to that album can feel the raw emotion that they were feeling at the time. Besides those songs paying tribute, there are some rock solid tunes that don't go in that same category. Can You Tell is a cute little boy-girl love song of sorts that is pretty damn catchy. Enjoy.

5.25.2011

Playa Playa. 5.25.11

Whaddup,

There once was a time when rappers were emcees, actually telling stories over a minimal beat and catchy lick here or there. I had to dig deep, MTV Jams style for this one.

Representing the Yay Area, Rappin 4 Tay made the follow-up to his debut album in 1994. "Don't Fight the Feelin'" was a hit with songs like Playa's Club, Dank Season and I'll Be Around.  Playa's Club went as far as #36 on the Billboard charts that year. Out of nowhere and pretty nifty for a young rapper from the Fillmore district in San Francisco.

Like a thief in the night, here's Playa's Club. Enjoy.

Euphoric Love. 5.20.11

Hey,

Today it's all about the music. No video. I thought a change from the ordinary posting habit was appropriate.

Hailing from Texas, Love Inks has a minimalist spacey sound with plenty of punch. They fully financed their album "E.S.P", and it is starting to gain attention in the US and UK. Pay attention to them!

This song is called Skeleton Key and it lifts you away on a euphoric cloud. Enjoy.

5.15.2011

You don't need to win it. 5.15.11

Hey all,

Took a bit of a much needed break but I'm back.

This song grabbed my attention right away. I'm a huge fan of Antony and the Johnsons and of Ray Lemontagne. I think a voice can make or break a song. Not necessarily because of how on pitch one is or how high someone can go but of something innately unique that can only be passed down through the genes. Some people you can listen to and hear their soul. That doesn't just come from a lot of training. It comes from upbringing, DNA, and most importantly the amount of love inside of the body. Patrick Watson has one hell of a voice.

Born in California but raised in Quebec, Canada, Watson released his first album in 2001. He has a lot of cabaret and classical music influences and has worked alongside such artists as Philip Glass and James Brown.

The song is The Great Escape. I'll post the wonderful lyrics below it. Enjoy.

Bad day, looking for a way,
home, looking for the great escape.
Gets in his car and drives away,
far from all the things that we are.
Puts on a smile and breathes it in
and breathes it out, he says,
bye bye bye to all of the noise.
Oh, he says, bye bye bye to all of the noise.

Doo doo doo doo doo noo noo
Doo doo doo doo doo noo noo noo noo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo noo noo noo

Hey child, things are looking down.
That’s okay, you don’t need to win anyways.
Don’t be afraid, just eat up all the gray
and it will fade all away.
Don’t let yourself fall down.

Doo doo doo doo doo noo noo
Doo doo doo doo doo noo noo noo noo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo noo noo noo

Bad day, looking for the great escape.
He says, bad day, looking for the great escape.
On a bad day, looking for the great escape,
the great escape.

Time is a crooked bow. 5.9.11

Back on the westside!

Andrew Bird's music hits very close to home. He was trained classically and always carries that training around with him in all of his recordings and performances. He started his first non-classical group in 1996 called the Bowl of Fire and they went on to release multiple records. After they disbanded in 2003, he was signed to Ani Difranco's Righteous Babe Records as a solo artist and he reinvented his image and sound.

His sound is very sophisticated but it doesn't take a high-brow being to catch on to his stuff. He always incorporates his violin into almost every song, while also playing guitar and singing as well.

This song is off of his "Armchair Apocrypha" album. This was the first album I got hooked on by him and it will always be my favorite. From the first song to the last, all have different vibes but they all fit into perfect place like a jigsaw puzzle. Here's Armchairs- Enjoy!

Lyrics:
I dreamed you were a cosmonaut
of the space between our chairs
And I was a cartographer
of the tangles in your hair

I sang the song that silence sings
It's the one that everybody knows, everybody knows
The song that silence sings
And this is how it goes

These looms that weave apocrypha
they're hanging from a strand
The dark and empty rooms were full
of incandescent hands

The awkward pause
The fatal flaw
Time, it's a crooked bow
Time is a crooked bow

In time you need to learn, to love
The ebb just like the flow
Grab hold of your bootstraps, and pull like hell
until gravity feels sorry for you, and lets you go
As if you lack the proper chemicals to know
the way it felt the last time you let yourself fall this low

Time's a crooked bow
Time's a crooked bow
Time, it's a crooked bow

Fifty-five and three-eighths years later
At the bottom of a gigantic crater
An armchair calls to you
Yeah, and armchair calls to you
It says, someday, we'll get back at them all
With epoxy and a pair of pliers
As ancient sea slugs begin to crawl
through the ragweed and barbed wire

You didn't write
You didn't call
It didn't cross your mind at all
Through the waves
waves of hay and straw
You couldn't feel a thing at all
Fifty-five and three-eighths
Time
Fifty-five and three-eighths
Time
Time

Dj cam. 5.5.11

Whaddup,

I'm bringing you a very different sound today so keep your ears and eyes in an open state of mind.

Flying Lotus (Steven Ellison) is an extremely rare talent. Being a multi-genre experimental producer and laptop artist DJ, that sort of comes with the turf. He released his first album in 2006 called "1983" and has since released two more, with the latest in 2010. He is always on the big-ticket summer festival line-up list (ie. Coachella) and is definitely a crowd favorite. The first album that I bought of his was "Los Angeles" and I have to admit it took me a good while to warm up to his sounds. Now that I'm on the other side looking back, I can say that he is one of the most sophisticated producers in the experimental- electronic genre and anyone who has seen him live is truly blessed. The way he coordinates his mixes and further remixes them (with a boat load of MIDI equipment surrounding him) is incredible, and he never misses a beat.

This video caught my eye because it gives the viewer a very seldom seen shot of what it's like to be the DJ at the concert, NOT the crowd. How he uses his technology, fuels the crowd, and soaks up the moment are really fascinating. Even if you don't care for his type of music, just watching him and his craft make one appreciate it in the very least. This is a live clip from a set of his at the Reset Festival in San Diego. Enjoy.

Moving McAlister. 5.1.11

Hello hello,

For the first time since writing this blog I'm actually posting a band that I know hardly anything about.

The Format formed in 2002, hailing from Phoenix, Arizona. They have a sort of indie, punk and folky sound with lots of 1960's influences. They chose their name to make fun of "the format" that major record companies look for when deciding on the next major hit single of the month. Unfortunately,
the band decided to call it quits in 2008 after just two albums.

I had not even heard of these guys until I saw the movie "Moving McAlister" (which I highly, highly recommend-it's even on Netflix). I immediately searched for the movie's soundtrack online and found out this was one of the song's I had loved. The Format wrote this song specifically for this movie, as you will find it's not on any of their studio albums. The song is called Swans and I think you'll dig it. Enjoy.

Second skin for you. 4.26.11

Hey again,

I've always held the highest regard for musicians and bands that do their own thing, unconcerned with radio-friendly tracks or star-studded earrings.

Belle and Sebastian were formed in the most unlikely of ways. In 1996, Stuart Murdoch and Stuart David (the founding members) decided to record a few demos for fun with their professor at Stow College and those demos wound up being selected by the Music Business department's student-run record label, Electric Honey. The label and school were so impressed that they urged both Stuarts to record a full-length album. After it's completion, the album "Tigermilk" was a hit within most of Scotland and the original vinyl copies (only 900 were made) now sell for more than 900 dollars. Stuart Murdoch decided to recruit artists to form a proper band and within months Belle and Sebastian as we know it came to exist.

In 2008, the band released the BBC sessions, which features an overview of their past and present songs.   I was originally going to post the BBC live version of the song Mornington Crescent from the album "The Life Pursuit" but I thought the vocals were too shabby for consideration. While searching for that song I came across this one. It's from the same album but the vocals and overall performance is much, much better. I think the lyrics are artful and really love the fact that the video initially seems like it's form the 60's or something (yes! for poor video quality). This is the kind of song you can cruise to, bop to and feel stable with. Enjoy.

4.24.2011

Sing to me darling. 4.24.11

Bonjour,

There's something about the french language that's so darn appealing to me. Add a beautiful woman and a catchy melody and I'm sold.

Francoise Hardy was one of the original pioneers of the ye-ye music movement in France in the 1960's. Young, sexy, and confident she signed on with Vogue records in 1961 and went on to release her first major hit, Tous le garcons et les filles, that same year. Throughout the 60's and 70's, she released chart-topping hits and further cemented her status among the elite French-pop artists of our time. Hardy was also very influential in the early french couture fashion scene, and was seen as a public fashion icon.

Comment Te Dire Adieu (How Can I Tell You Goodbye) is a catchy song with simple, meaningful lyrics:

"I don't want to react badly without any pretext. You need to explain to me how to tell you goodbye.
My silex heart is flammable, my pyrex heart is fire-resistant. I'm so confused; I don't want to get used to goodbyes."

It's no wonder this song was a hit. Everyone can relate to what's being said. What's more, the lyrics are put to music with a constant, driving beat and an almost naively upbeat musical accompaniment. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

4.21.2011

Life without regret and Life with all sorts of regrets. 4.21.11

Whoosh...and we're back,

LCD Soundsystem is the brainchild of frontman and producer James Murphy (also co-founder of DFA Records). Born in New York, the band started out as an underground dance-rock favorite among locals.

After the release of their second album, "The Sound of Silver", they were hardly underground at all. With songs like North American Scum, Get Innocuous and Someone Great, every music magazine in the country took notice.

Their third and last album, "This is Happening", was proclaimed by Murphy to be "better than the previous two" and popular director Spike Jonze signed on and directed the music video for the first single, Drunk Girls, off that album.  Very shortly after its release the band announced they were calling it quits and were walking away while on top. They decided to play one last time for the fans that loved them and in the city where it all started. Madison Square Garden, New York- April 2, 2011.

Boy, I wish I had been there.

This song has always been special to me mostly because of the amazingly well written lyrics. I think the repetition of the guitar, bass and piano lines lure you in and create a sort of captivating blur where the lyrics can take center stage. From their Sound of Silver album, All My Friends speaks about what we lose as we get older and how important each and every moment is. I am posting the lyrics below the link. Read them and consider them and enjoy.

That's how it starts.
We go back to your house.
We check the charts,
And start to figure it out.

And if it's crowded, all the better,
because we know we're gonna be up late.
But if you're worried about the weather
then you picked the wrong place to stay.
That's how it starts.

And so it starts.
You switch the engine on.
We set controls for the heart of the sun,
one of the ways we show our age.

And if the sun comes up, if the sun comes up, if the sun comes up
and I still don't wanna stagger home.
Then it's the memory of our betters
that are keeping us on our feet.

You spent the first five years trying to get with the plan,
and the next five years trying to be with your friends again.

You're talking 45 turns just as fast as you can,
yeah, I know it gets tired, but it's better when we pretend.

It comes apart,
the way it does in bad films.
Except in parts,
when the moral kicks in.

Though when we're running out of the drugs
and the conversation's winding away.
I wouldn't trade one stupid decision
for another five years of lies.

You drop the first ten years just as fast as you can,
and the next ten people who are trying to be polite.
When you're blowing eighty-five days in the middle of France,
Yeah, I know it gets tired only where are your friends tonight?

And to tell the truth.
Oh, this could be the last time.
So here we go,
like a sail's force into the night

And if I made a fool, if I made a fool, if I made a fool
on the road, there's always this.
And if I'm sewn into submission,
I can still come home to this.

And with a face like a dad and a laughable stand,
you can sleep on the plane or review what you said.
When you're drunk and the kids leave impossible tasks
you think over and over, "hey, I'm finally dead."

Oh, if the trip and the plan come apart in your hand,
you look contorted on yourself your ridiculous prop.
You forgot what you meant when you read what you said,
and you always knew you were tired, but then,
where are your friends tonight?

Where are your friends tonight?
Where are your friends tonight?

If I could see all my friends tonight,
If I could see all my friends tonight,
If I could see all my friends tonight,
If I could see all my friends tonight

It's the layers. 4.18.11

Hola,

I happened upon Juana Molina one day when I was listening to UC Berkeley's college radio station. they played the song Un Dia and it captivated me. I'm not sure if it was the Spanish influences, the Radiohead-like chord progressions and beats, or if it was just the right song at the right moment. Whatever the reason, I became hooked. I think I listened to her album "Un Dia"(2008) about five thousand times in one week and I still listen to it a lot even three years later.

Molina was born in Argentina and then moved to Paris in 1976 when her family fled from the military coup in Buenos Aires. She grew up in a musical environment and her dad taught her tango and flamenco inspired guitar at the age of 5. She is better known throughout Argentina and most of Latin America as an actress on the popular TV show "Juana y sus hermanas" but to the rest of us she suddenly rose out of the earth in 2000 when her second album, fittingly called "Segundo", hit the scene. Since then she has released three more albums and each has received high acclaim. Her live shows are said to be magical and her use of technology to layer and mix her music on the stage are breathtaking.

This is off her last album, "Un Dia", called Vive Solo. Even if you don't understand the lyrics, you'll understand the song. Enjoy.

Check it. 4.14.11

Hey all,

Got a band that's semi-new to the scene. My uncle emailed me this track a few weeks ago and the moment I heard it I fell in love.

Milagres was formed in 2010 and are based in Brooklyn, NY. They have a pretty laid back sound but it's very uplifting and bouncy at the same time. They're about to embark on their Spring 2011 US Tour and on the 25th they will be playing at TT the Bear's in Cambridge, which I most definitely will be at. Come and show your support for a really talented band that's well on it's way to becoming nationally recognized.

This song was performed at the Central SAPC in Santa Monica, CA and it's called Glowing Mouth. Enjoy.

Folktronica 101. 4.10.11

Yo,

Hardly anyone I know has heard of The Beta Band. This saddens me.

The Beta Band was formed in 1996, originally under the name The Pigeons (glad that didn't stick). They started out by releasing three individual EP's over the span of about two years. They all received such critical acclaim that they decided to combine them into one album called The Three EP's. This sparked an almost immediate cult/avid follower group and led them all the way to #3 on Q magazine's "Top 50 bands you need to see before you die". Their sound has been called "folktronica"- a mix of folk, electronic and rock music. By the time 2004 rolled around, the band had put so much energy into their four albums that they decided to call it quits. I personally do not know of a band that existed for only 7 years that gained such a passionate fan base like Beta did. To show their appreciation, they decided to record their last performance at the Shepherds Bush Empire and turned it into a really great DVD.

This song isn't necessarily one of their best, but it is the best music video they did. It's from their album "Hot Shots II" called Human Being.

Nurses are sexy. Nurses dancing to The Beta Band are, well, you'll see. Enjoy.

Three jumping backwards. 4.8.11

Oy mates,

Time for some 80's Britpop.

New Order was my sanctuary as a kid. All the beats, synth and rhythmic melodies were brain food to me. New Order was/is basically Joy Division minus Ian Curtis. They formed in 1980 after Ian took his life. They went on to become one of the most influential bands of the 80's, successfully combing new wave and electronic dance and by also bringing new music to the club scenes.

This next song is called True Faith. I especially like the video for this one because it's one of the first real music videos made in the eighties. Not too mention it's pretty badass to think that these styles were popular back in the day. Watch past the first minute to get hooked.

Enjoy.

Icky What? 4.5.11

Oy all,

First troubling news of the day. My friend Cherylann had originally requested the Bob Dylan classic I Want You but for some reason I was unable to find any videos of the song or even of Bobby singing it live. Turns out Sony have been on a HUGE rampage and have taken all of Bob Dylan's songs that aren't officially licensed off of Youtube and other online sites. I understand why they are doing this but I think it's a real shame that people can't access Dylan during his live performances without buying an over-priced DVD. Moving on though, she did have a backup song in mind.

The White Stripes were my bridge between Green Day and Radiohead. As odd as that sounds, this band really revolutionized the rock scene in the early 2000's and beyond. Meg and Jack took a lo-fi recording approach and melded it with punk-rock and blues influences to come up with a very simplistic, catchy and easy to listen to sound. Their first two albums were not noticed because many critics didn't understand this new sound the Stripes were emitting. Then for their third album, "White Blood Cells", they decided to sign with a pretty big label (V2) and drew immediate success in the UK charts. The US began to take notice. Their next album called "Elephant" sealed the deal. While "White Blood Cells" had Fell In Love With A Girl, that was really all it had going for it in the public eye. "Elephant" boasts songs like Seven Nation Army, I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself, The Hardest Button to Button and There's No Home For You Here. "Elephant" ended up winning a Best Alternative Music Album (2004) grammy and Seven Nation Army won for Best Rock Song as well.

This next song comes from their last official album before their breakup (Icky Thump, 2007) and it's called A Martyr For My Love For You. Enjoy.

April Foo's Day. 4.1.11

Happy April Fool's day everybody,

It was a stressful week and I'm so glad it's the weekend. Thought I'd bring you a song that always seems to cheer me up. It's called "Cold Day In The Sun" by the Foo Fighters. The lyrics in this song are actually quite melancholy but the beat and chordal patterns make it pretty uplifting, which makes me think that the band wanted us (the listeners) to know that there would be some hope for the person mentioned in the lyrics. The singer and lead guitarist, Dave Grohl, was originally the drummer for Nirvana. In a fun twist Grohl lets his drummer, Taylor Hawkins, sing the lead part in this song with Grohl taking a more backseat role. I think it's a really great switch-up and Foo Fighters should really let Hawkins sing more often.

This is form their Skin and Bones DVD. Enjoy.

3.30.2011

Blast Off. 3.30.11

Hey oh,

I realized that I've been posting mostly live performances for a bit so I thought I'd revert back to some awesome music videos for a change.

Atlas Sound is a solo venture by Bradford Cox, the well known lead singer from the psycho-ambient band Deerhunter. What I find super interesting about this guy is he believes in "stream-of-consciousness" writing. That is to say, he sits down and presses record and out comes the music. He doesn't write any lyrics beforehand. Nor any chords or melodies for that matter. By the end of the process if he doesn't like what he's made, he presses delete and starts over.

This whole process came about when he was ten and had a tape player (brand name Atlas Sound) with two tape decks. He would play around with looping and overlapping and would record whatever came out. This eventually led to many of his early songs as an aspiring artist with Deerhunter.

Bradford refers to his second Atlas Sound album, Logos, as "not about me" and "the view is a lot more panoramic and less close-up. I became bored with introspection". He is referring to his first album as Atlas Sound which is mostly autobiographical with its lyrics.

He's been picked to open up at the "All Tomorrow's Parties" fest by Animal Collective, who will be overseeing the whole shindig. The song below is from Logos and it's called "Walkabout" ft. Noah Lennox aka Panda Bear. The video is made up of old stock footage of boys and their astronaut dreams. Enjoy.

3.29.2011

Ah yeah solid. 3.29.11

How's it be,

Just finished a mashup of "Fools" by The Temper Trap and "Absynth" by Woolfy. Sounds good in a sort of meditative electronic trance kind of way (hmmm). Anyway....

Thought I'd bring y'all some homecookin' straight from Spin magazine's CMJ showcase. Everyone knows the song "Sweet Disposition" by 'Trap, mostly from the 500 Days of Summer soundtrack. What they don't know is this is one of THE absolute best sounding live bands out there. Almost all of their sound live is created by the instruments on stage rather than some pre-recorded BS pumped through the PA system. The lead singer, Dougy Mandagi, is a rare treat. Their debut album, Conditions, is full of hits top to bottom. The band is from Melbourne, Australia and they represent their country well. Take a listen, look past the one or two pitchy notes, appreciate the precision, and enjoy.

3.28.2011

Food for thought. 3.28.11

Oh hey,

Mission complete: Apartment fully cleaned and smelling like a fresh can of febreeze (ah!).

UB40 (Unemplyment Benefit, Form 40) is a band that was always on in the background when I was a kid, especially the song "Red, Red Wine". My mom and I used to dance to that song, and she'd twirl me up in the air and back down again. Very good memories needless to say.

The band was formed in 1978 out of England. They've had so many chart topping hits (I think 40 or so) that any person who was born in the fifties or sixties will automatically start singing along to songs of theirs. They started out as mostly a pure reggae band but transitioned to pop covers in the style of reggae, which ended up serving them well because these were the songs that became popular chart-toppers. Call me crazy but I still think they're earlier albums are better.

Here is a track off of their debut album Signing Off called "Food For Thought". Enjoy.

3.27.2011

Nobody said it was easy. 3.27.11

Hey,

So I find myself sitting here listening to "The Scientist" by Coldplay. There's something about this song that is insanely comforting to me. Almost like a reset button being pushed. It's been a tiring weekend so far and it's not over yet. Major house cleaning on the slate for tomorrow. I don't know if it's the cold temperatures or the earthquake in japan or still readjusting from spring break but these past few days have felt just off, not necessarily in a bad way, but definitely slanted off the regular balance of things. At first I thought I was just crazy but after talking to numerous people I calmed down. Everyone has said they feel something but have no idea what it is.

I've been slightly jet lagged and full of creative energy lately so I've been doing some writing, some sketching and some poetry. All under the category of "wow, this is kind of cool but I'm keeping it to myself for the time being". It's been immensely therapeutic.

Saw the movie "Limitless" tonight as well. Really well done flick, just sort of made me think "I want to be really rich, right now". I sort of envy that lifestyle. Not sure if it's a good lifestyle, it just seems mysterious and everybody is dressed all nice and proper and they get special treatment. For the people out there who have busted their ass and gotten to that point then I tip my hat to them, but for the ones who get lucky, I'm envious.

This is officially the longest rant I've had so far on here, feeling sort of proud of myself for stringing together so many sentences. For those of you who want a reset, check out the song. Enjoy.

3.26.2011

I want to go to there. 3.26.11

Yo,

Millionyoung is so new to the scene he doesn't even have a wikipedia yet. His music is catchy and uplifting and his songs always make me feel good. Check out this video for his song, "Cynthia", it's bound to inspire. Enjoy.

3.24.2011

"Like the soundtrack from there will be blood" but better. way better. 3.24.11

Hey everybody,

Grew up a stone cold fan of LCD Soundsystem. They were one of the first bands in the mid 2000's to bridge the alternative rock and electronic music gap. Fronted by songwriter and producer James Murphy, their 2010 release, "This is Happening", charted in the Billboard Top 10 list. I personally love their second full-length album, "Sound of Silver", especially the song below, "Someone Great". I just think the overall orchestration of this piece is phenomenal. While Murphy's live singing abilities are sub-par, the live shows LCD puts on are resoundingly memorable, due in large part to the atmosphere the band creates.

This clip was taken at the Fox Theater in Pomona CA in 2010. Enjoy.

3.22.2011

So nuch thing. 3.22.11

At first it looks like a music video...but think again.

Nosaj Thing (Patrick Chung) is a master Dj/Mixer/Producer of beats and anything electronic and experimental. I've been a fan of his since he self released his first album in '06. In 2009, Alpha Pup records picked him up and he released his EP "Drift" to immense success (at least within the electronic scene). Besides putting on amazing shows and producing unique music, he often remixes tons of songs just for fun (Radiohead's "Reckoner" and Flying Lotus's "Camel"). This is a clip from his Brainfeeder Sessions, at the Independent, with digital art coming from Fair Enough.

3.21.2011

American apparel elephants in the woods. 3.20.11

Hey all,

Special treat for you today. Casiokids is a Norwegian band that was formed in 2005 and is slowly catching on here in the states. NME (britain's rolling stone for new artists) has raved about these guys for years now. They have two full albums and an EP so far and their newest one, "Topp Stemming Pa Lokal Bar"(great vibe at local bar), comes up swinging for the fences. The songs "Fot i Hose" and "En Vill Hest" are chart toppers in the making and the song I'm bringing you today is absolute crackerjacks. It's called "Finn Bikkjen"(find the dog) and it rocks. Check it out. Now.

3.20.2011

There's a man with a gun over there. 3.19.11

Yo,

Realized last night my computer was still on east coast time so I put the wrong date. For all of you groundhog day movie fans out there March 19 just happened twice.

In the 1960's, the Smothers Brothers Comedy hour was the hippest, funniest show around. They frequently had bands drop by to showcase their stuff and this time Buffalo Springfield was the lucky guest. This song gets me every time, especially given it was written and popularized during the Vietnam war era. It made a lot of people stop and think about things in a time where that was very much needed. For what it's worth, here's "For what it's worth" by Buffalo Springfield. Enjoy.

3.19.2011

Is it summer yet? 3.19.11

Hello hello,
One evening when I was doing my rounds on itunes for new music I stumbled across the band "Real Estate". They only have one album out so far (self-titled, released in '09) but they've garnered a lot of attention over the past year, due in large part to playing the Primavera Festival in Barcelona and the Pitchfork Fest in Chicago. After listening to their whole album, I can't say I found a song that truly disappoints. Many of the songs are downtempo but all are uppers in the sense that they make one think of better times ahead. This recording is from their set at the Primavera, in Juan Miro park in Barcelona. Sit back and check this out.

3.18.2011

Shruggin. 3.17.11

Thought this video was supremely unique. Super catchy song that makes your head start bobbing whether you like it or not. Enjoy.

3.17.2011

Happy St. Pat's Day. 3.17.11

Hola,
It's a green wave of people out there today so I thought I'd post something with some Irish significance.

I'm sure most of you out there have either seen the movie "Once" or at least heard of it. The movie features two artists,Glen Hansard (of the popular Irish band "The Frames") and Marketa Irglova, that come together to record an independent EP and in the process form an intense emotional and artistic bond with each-other.

Because of the immense success of the movie and its songs, the two form an actual band called "The Swell Season" and release an album and go on tour. One of the stops on tour was the Amoeba Records on Haight street back home in SF, which many of my friends were fortunate enough to go to. After enough digging, I found a video from that concert. Their voices sound even better than they do on the actual album recording and their faces show how much emotion they put into their performances. Listen past the 2 min mark to get tingles and enjoy.

3.16.2011

Prog rock at its finest. 3.16.11

When I first saw this video I instantly fell in love with pre-Phil Collins Genesis. Lots of people don't realize that the band Genesis almost has two halves of its existence. One with the great Peter Gabriel as the frontman (with Phil Collins on the drums) and the other with Phil Collins leaving the drums for the microphone. Gabriel was famous for his costumes and decorations during early-Genesis live performances, and here is a perfect example of that. Enjoy.

3.15.2011

Girl, step inside my Hyundai. 3.15.11

Oy,

I've decided to post twice today because my flight home is tomorrow and we all know jet lag is a bitch.

Beck needs no introduction. This song needs no explanation. Laugh and enjoy.

Lyrics:
I met you at JC Penney
I think your name tag said "jenny"
I cold step to you with a fresh pack of gum
Somehow I knew you were lookin' for some

Like a fruit that's ripe for the pickin'
I wouldn't do you like that, Zankou Chicken
'Cause only you've got a thing
That I just got to get with
I just got to get, get with you
And you know what we're gonna do

I wanna get with you
Oh girl, and your sister
I think her name's Debra

I wanna get with you, only you
Girl, and your sister
I think her name's Debra

Girl, I only wanna be there with you
'Cause you got something that I just got to get with

I pick you up late night at work
I said, "Lady, step inside my Hyundai"
I'm gonna take you up to Glendale, yeah
Gonna take you for a real good meal

'Cause when our eyes did meet
Girl you know I was packin' heat
Ain't no use in wastin' no time
Gettin' to know each other, you know the deal

'Cause only you got a thing
That I just got to get with, got to get with
I just got to get with you girl

And so on......

Get your bounce on. 3.15.11

Hey all,
Today I've decided to mix it up a little and bring you a band that has it's roots with Berklee School for Dub Musicians. They're called Crush Club and they're quickly rising on the scene. This is one of their most popular singles and it's called "Love-Aholic" featuring G-Eazy. Check it out and enjoy.

3.13.2011

First Post. 3.13.11.

First off, let me just say that I've always wanted to have a blog about life and music and my aim is to bring you a good mix of both.

The first video I'm going to post is by a great up and coming band called Toro y Moi (or rather Chazwick Bundick and Co.) Chaz and fellow musical luminary Ernest Greene (of Washed Out) have been key players in the new Chillwave movement. Toro's first album for Carpark Records, "Causers of This", came out in the summer of '10 and they recently released their second full length LP "Underneath the Pine"on 2/22/11.

Here's their new video for the song "Still Sound" off their new album. Enjoy.
